Powder coating is in a form different from general coatings, existing in the form of fine powder. For there is no solvent, it is called powder coating. Powder coating is mainly characterized by no harm, high efficiency, resources conservation and environmental protection.
It can be divided into two categories: thermoplastic powder coatings and thermosetting powder coatings.
Thermoplastic powder coatings consist of components like thermoplastic resin, pigments, fillers, plasticizers and stabilizers. Such thermoplastic powder coatings include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyether series, polyamide series and polyester series.
Thermosetting powder coatings consist of thermosetting resin, curing agents, pigments, fillers and auxiliary agents. Such thermosetting powder coatings include epoxy resin series, polyester series and acrylic resin series.
Disadvantages: Powder at edges or corners is heterogeneous; coating defects after curing can hardly be covered; requirements of curing conditions are high.
There are numerous classification standards; names of various kinds of powder on the market are not unified. They can be divided into two categories based on the properties of film forming matters: thermoplastic powder coatings and thermosetting powder coatings, or, based on the appearance of film forming matters, into the delustering type, the high light type and the fine arts type etc, or, based on the application environment, into two categories: the indoor type and the outdoor type.
The fields with the biggest growth on China’s powdering coating market are the shipbuilding industry and the pipeline industry. Problems exist in the impact resistance and the hygroscopicity, yet to be improved. Researchers mainly focus on the modification of base materials. The storage stability and coating construction properties of China-made pipeline anti-corrosion epoxy powder coatings still somehow lag behind those of superior foreign products.
As automobile powder coating manufacturing technologies advance in foreign countries, coatings for automobile finish coat, timber and plastics are potential markets with greatest dynamics. The automotive industry will be its biggest consumer. The powder coating markets in Greece, Turkey and East Europe are with great momentum for growth, and the potential on the Asia-Pacific market is even bigger, regarded as the fastest growing area in the world.
